Bishop Terence Patrick Blesses Refurbished Church Hall

The parish was delighted to welcome our diocesan bishop the Rt Rev Terence Patrick on Sunday 8th December. After celebrating Mass with Father David, the Bishop blessed the hall as parish members gathered to admire the work which has taken a dedicated band of volunteers two years to complete. Under the watchful eye of the indefatigable Julia Lidster, the hall has been gutted, brought up to current building regulations and made more accessible for people with mobility difficulties.

A page dedicated to documenting the recent works to the church, the church grounds and the church hall may be found by following this link.

During the event, those present were treated to a mouth-watering array of cakes provided by Edith, one of the parish’s most talented bakers.

The hall is more than the social heart of the parish, and, even though it was showing its age, (aren’t we all!) it provided a home for the children’s liturgy group, the prayer group, the Catholic Women’s League, post-Mass tea and coffee, numerous social events and enabled the parish to host the periodical Driffield ‘Churches Together’ lunch.  All of these groups will now be able to meet with the added benefit of accessible toilet facilities and a very swish new kitchen which even has a dishwasher, not to mention a tasteful new décor.

So many people and organisations have contributed to the funding and the work on the hall, and we would especially like to give a shout out to:

Our Funders:

Tesco, Driffield
The Dewhirst Foundation
The Horace Taylor Trust
The purchasers of post-Mass tea and coffee

We would like to send an extra special thank you to the children of Our Lady and St Peters school in Bridlington who undertook many fund-raising events on our behalf. This enabled Julia to achieve her special dream of matching chairs for the hall.

Ill-matching assortment!
Our lovely new chairs

Thanks to:-

Children and parents of Our Lady and St Peters, Bridlington

We would also like to thank all the local tradespeople who have carried out the work on the hall, including Nick from DAW electrical services; Dean Mooring, plasterer; Keith Richmond, plumber; Ted Harper, painter; Michael Scott who laid the floor. The project also benefitted from the support and advice of Paul and his team at Jewson’s building supplies.

Also, thank you to the Cadenza Choir, all the volunteers and to Bishop Terence Patrick for his blessing.

And finally… a major thank you to the children’s liturgy group for the first major production to take place in the hall—the Children’s Nativity which was enjoyed by all.

Merry Christmas to everyone.
